Deitrick Haddon: I want people to say that Deitrick was a unique individual, he didn't follow all the rules but he did it God's way. He stayed true to his heart, that's my mission. I'm telling these young people don't let the traditions of men smother your creativity. It's time to bring creativity back to gospel music, the reason why we're light years behind Rock, Pop and all these other cultures is because we don't really flow in our art. We just sing Praise and Worship, put on a suit and tie, scream and holler, stumble upon a hit and then we go. But, I think there's room for entertainment and art in Gospel music, so that's my mission. That's why I'm telling young people to be yourself, be the artist you know you can be.

Bill Riddick Interview

Encore: For those who are not familiar, talk about your role in this historic event and the method you used.

Bill: I know some people have likened it to “America’s Got Talent”, but it’s completely different. While there may be a couple of aspects that are similar, this is so In July 1971, I was asked to do a charrette which is a planning process. It's a 10 day procedure where you go to that neighborhood or community, put together a steering committee and select two co-chairs. At that time the two co-chairs selected were Ann Atwater and C.P. Ellis. What happened to them at the last day was C.P. Ellis tore up his Klan card. That was a step that nobody could predict and expected. It was truly amazing and one of the most touching events I have witnessed in my life. I didn’t see them again until Osha Davidson wrote the book "The Best of Enemies, which was about 20 years later. I found out at that time they became the best of friends.

Encore: In the movie actor Babou Ceesay plays you, how did you feel about his portrayal of you?

Bill: I was involved in this process before Robin Bissell wrote the script and I went to some of the shooting of the film. Initially, I was unhappy with Babou and how he was playing me and I mentioned it to Robin Bissell. He told Babou to have a walk with me. So, we walked and talked. When he got back on set, Babou really heard what I said and did a magnificent job of portraying me.

Encore: What was your initial reaction to one of the most touching events in your life being made into a movie?

Bill: There were people who approached us before. They would approach C.P. and Ann about doing something, but it would just fall through. When Robin Bissell asked to have a meeting, I thought it was just another kind of charade, I thought it was too difficult to do. If I had any power in it had to be the truth, I was not going to be part of something that was a half-truth. He understood that and we had three meetings before he wrote the first word on the script. I had the privilege to read the script before it became public and we made some real changes that he was okay with, obviously my stance was that it be the truth and the movie is the truth.

James Hall Interview

James Hall: Choir music is relevant to me because I've always been in my own class, I like to be me. Choir music will never go out of style, when you go see a movie and they have a church scene, you see a choir. That's what we know as church and I've been on programs where everyone was doing praise and worship which is always in order, but it's nothing like going to a church and hearing a dynamic choir, nothing can take the place of that.

I come from a musical church where the music was phenomenal, we had dynamic singers so my church was really one of my greatest influences. When Worship and Praise started, I'll never forget the project that really made me want to change how we sung and that was Thomas Whitfield. I was blown away by the quality of their singing, so I tried to mimic that sound. Of course we don't sound anything like them, but that was one of my greatest influences because I loved the quality of their sound.

Janice Gaines: What has got me to this point is believing in myself and having to go back and be like, "Thank you Lord, all my confidence is in you. I'm depending on you, because I'm just doing what you asked me to do." Every artist should figure out what makes them unique and just be themselves, because in order to be in this job you have to be able to sustain what's authentic. It's all about figuring out who we are as people and keeping that authentic.
